Wooden Kindergarten Katariina
Wooden Kindergarten Katariina
Wooden Kindergarten Katariina is located in Kotka, Finland in a parklike environment near the sea.
In the neighbourhood, there is an outdoor swimming pool, old barrack ruins and mansard roof houses. The level difference up to 12 meters at the plot was demanding, but after investigating options for building location and massing of construction parts, we found a good position in the middle of the plot.
The building consists of two triangular pieces, connected with large terraces that open towards the outdoor pool and provide shelter from the rain. Recesses are highlighted with a horizontal massive wood plank cladding, standing out from the white vertical cladding of the rest of the facade.
The interior elements of the kindergarten are placed around the aisle, following the building mass. The building’s shape appears inside as winding, playful interior. Turning to different directions open interesting views inside and out. The interior colours are inspired by the rushy sea coast, from blue to green and yellow.
