Renovation of clarification plant at Vanhakaupunki water treatment plant, Helsinki
AFRY Ark Studio was responsible for architectural and main design of this cultural-historically significant renovation project.
Built in 1926 and 1939, the clarification plant at Vanhakaupunki water treatment plant is located in a cultural built environment of national significance in Helsinki. The building is one of the important red-brick buildings in Vanhakaupunki area, designed by Helsinki city architect, Gunnar Taucher. It is one of the oldest drinking water purification buildings still in use in Finland.
The damages to the facade, roof and foundations were investigated and thoroughly repaired. Due to building preservation, the design and execution was done in close collaboration with Helsinki City Museum. Knowledge of materials and construction methods of the time when the plant was built were key to success in the project. The renovation continues the original use of the building far into the future.
