ICOLD 28th Congress & 93rd Annual Meeting and international symposium on "Common Challenges, Shared Future, Better Dams"

The mission of ICOLD is setting standards and guidelines to ensure that dams and levees are built and operated safely, efficiently, economically, and are environmentally sustainable and socially equitable.

The theme of the 93nd ICOLD 2025 International Symposium is "Common Challenges, Shared Future, Better Dams," to promote and improve the international technical cooperation in the field of dams and reservoirs.

Dr. Marco Conrad has more than 20 years of experience in dam engineering, predominantly through international projects in Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Europe and is specialized in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams with experience in the different RCC philosophies, methodologies, and their specifics.

Expert Concrete Dams and Seismicity

Dr. Martin Wieland has been the Chairman of the ICOLD Committee on Seismic Aspects of Dam Design since 1999 and has more than 40 years of experience in dam and earthquake engineering. He has worked in 35 countries, on 115 dam projects and obtained his civil engineering degrees from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. He has authored 300 technical papers in the fields of dam and earthquake engineering and is an Honorary Member of ICOLD.

Stefan Ehlers has more than 20 years of experience in the planning, design and safety evaluation of dams, hydropower schemes and hydraulic structures. He has gained international experience on numerous large dam and hydropower projects in many parts of the world. Currently he is member of the Technical Commission of the Swiss Committee on Dams.

Dr. Dainius Tirunas has over 20 years of experience in large hydropower projects worldwide, with a focus on Central and Southeast Asia. He has been serving as project manager, contract specialist, or hydropower expert in numerous international assignments. His areas of expertise include the management of large-scale hydropower projects for feasibility study, design, and construction phases, as well as the planning of hydropower schemes and development of methodologies for project implementation.

Magnus Löfqvist is an ecologist with a specialization towards fresh water and more than 20 years of experience in the field of environmental assessments, with regards both to physical remediation measures and permitting and licensing processes regarding dams. Magnus is the Swedish representative in ICOLD technical committee G.

Daniel Carlson Bjernald holds a master's degree in civil engineering from Lund University (LTH) and has expertise in advanced numerical analysis using FEA, and in analysis and design of large and small hydropower plants. Daniel is a member of SwedCOLD, working to inspire a new generation of dam engineers and participating in the Swedish national initiative "Future in Hydropower". Daniel is lead author of an Energiforsk report, conducting a survey on the future need of competences for dam safety.

Alice Stilgård was awarded the 2025 year scholarship offered by SwedCOLD to increase the participation of junior engineers and professionals in the proceedings of ICOLD. Alice holds a master's degree in civil engineering and is working in the field of dam safety, focused mainly on projects concerning modernization and strengthening of concrete dams. Alice is currently the lead author of two reports for the Swedish Research and Knowledge Institue of Energiforsk.
