AFRY will design a demonstration plant for second generation biofuels

AFRY will design a demonstration plant for second generation biofuels. The contract is signed with Silva Green Fuel AS, which is owned by Statkraft and Södra. The demonstration plant will be built at Tofte in Norway and will produce advanced, second generation biofuel based on raw material from the forest.

The demonstration plant is being built to test the technology before making the decision to invest in a larger commercial plant. Advanced second generation biofuels based on renewable forest raw materials can be an important contributor to reducing CO2 emissions from the transport sector, which account for 33 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Norway.

Broad expertise in biofuels

AFRY has broad expertise in the development of advanced biofuels and has established a strong position within the industry market in Norway following the merger between ÅF and Pöyry in 2019. AFRY is a leading player in the Nordics within biofuels engineering, design and consulting services.

The company has been involved in the pre-project and has now been commissioned to detail engineer the demonstration plant at Tofte. As part of the contract AFRY will provide engineering consultancy and design services for process engineering, mechanical, building, electrical and instrument, fire safety and geotechnical solutions.

Jon Julsen, Director of Process Industries at AFRY in Norway is pleased with the confidence in AFRY: “Our goal is to create sustainable solutions for our customers and this groundbreaking project gives us the opportunity to make a difference in the transport sector. Biofuels are one of our focus areas and we look forward to developing a good solution together with Silva Green Fuel.”
