PT PLN Indonesia Power has appointed AFRY to perform Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) for five large solar PV projects located on Java Island. The projects represent a significant contribution to Indonesia’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.

PT PLN Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of the state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero), is a key player in Indonesia's electricity sector and one of Southeast Asia's leading power generation companies, managing over 21 GW of power plants across the country.

In alignment with the government's efforts to expedite the transition to renewable energy, PT PLN Indonesia Power has launched Proyek Hijaunesia 2023, an initiative encompassing multiple renewable energy projects involving solar and wind power projects.

AFRY has been appointed to conduct environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) for five solar photovoltaic projects with a total capacity of 500MW, consisting of three floating solar PV systems and two ground-mounted PV plants, on Java, Indonesia.

The ESIAs will run concurrently with the regulatory Environmental Impact Assessment process (AMDAL) and adhere to international standards, specifically the ADB Safeguards and IFC Performance Standards.

“The Hijaunesia megaproject represents a continuation of PLN Indonesia Power's commitment to renewable energy development, as outlined in the 2021–2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan, with a focus on green energy with a capacity of 7 GW”, emphasised Edwin Nugraha Putra, the CEO of PT PLN Indonesia Power.

“We are delighted to continue the cooperation with PLN Indonesia Power which has led us to be entrusted as the environmental consultant for these large floating and ground-mounted solar PV projects. This is an important step to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and expedite the country's transition towards cleaner energy sources”, says Petteri Härkki, AFRY's Regional Director Asia, highlighting AFRY’s longstanding relationship with PT PLN Indonesia Power.

In Indonesia, AFRY has experience in environmental and social advisory services totalling over 5 GW of renewable energy and power sector projects. Combining AFRY’s position as one of the leading renewable energy sector consultants in Indonesia, with its in-depth knowledge of Indonesian environmental and social requirements, as well as lenders requirements such as Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards and ADB Safeguards, makes AFRY a one-stop shop to support sustainable energy transition in the country.
