Östermalms Saluhall

Östermalms Saluhall

The City of Stockholm is set to renovate and upgrade Östermalms Saluhall during 2016-2018. The aims of the project are to develop Östermalms Saluhall into a modern and eco-friendly marketplace and to create the conditions for efficient and financially viable operations.

Östermalms Saluhall was inaugurated in 1888 to serve as a public market for food and delicacies. It was designed by architects Gustaf Clason and Kaspar Salin. When it opened there was room for 108 merchants; today there are around twenty.

Over time Östermalms Saluhall has fallen into such poor condition that the City of Stockholm would most likely need to close it down within a couple of years unless measures are taken. The technical installations need to be replaced in order to meet official standards for safety, accessibility, health, energy and environmental performance. The City of Stockholm Real Estate Office are upgrading and developing Östermalm Saluhall, recreating the appearance and atmosphere of the original hall.

To preserve the hall’s distinctive character whilst meeting modern requirements, the hall is expanded into the neighbouring property Riddaren 13. The property is undergoing a total refurbishment and will comprise restaurants, shops and offices.

All in all, the renovation project covers an area of approximately 13,000 sq. m., of which the original food hall makes up around 8,600 sq. m. The technical renovation includes complete replacement of water and wastewater, heating, cooling, sprinkler, control and monitoring systems.

During the rebuilding period, the merchants have been offered the opportunity to stay in business in a temporary pavilion with an area of 1,800 square meters set up in the square outside.
