Hit the Road – Addressing France’s EV Charging Infrastructure Requirements

AFRY was commissioned by Avere-France to publish a study analysing public EV charging needs in France by 2035.

The "Hit the Road" project incorporates three extensive volumes: State of Charging in France, EV Charging on Major Roadways, and EV Charging in Underserved Areas.

Volume 1 - State of Charging in France

This volume lays the groundwork by assessing the current state of charging infrastructure in France. Our study covers urban, peri-urban, and rural areas, exploring the government’s e-mobility commitments, especially its objective of producing 2 million EVs by 2030.

Volume 2 - EV Charging on Major Roadways

The second volume explores the specific challenges of EV charging infrastructure along major roadways, specifically highways, with a few areas still poorly equipped with charging stations. We include comprehensive modelling to estimate the energy requirements, with results indicating a need for over 40,000 charge points on major French roadways by 2035.

Volume 3 - EV Charging in Underserved Areas

The final volume focuses on the EV charging infrastructure needs in underserved areas. National coverage and the scale of small itinerancy are two critical components that need to be addressed. In our modelling for the years 2030-2035, we identify that between 300,000 to 400,000 charging points would be required to meet the needs of over 12 million electric vehicles in a central scenario.
