RES developers: time to invest in hydrogen?

When

10-December-2020

This webinar considers the issues affecting renewable developers in countries where hydrogen and RES are being developed, using the Netherlands as a case study.

In its goal to decarbonise the Dutch economy by 49% by 2030, the Netherlands is pushing for further growth in its renewable capacity, with specific targets for 35TWh/yr of large-scale onshore RES, 11.5GW of offshore wind by 2030 and the introduction of a new support scheme, the SDE++.

With the release of its National Strategy on Hydrogen, the Dutch Government is also targeting the development of a zero-carbon hydrogen economy to decarbonise its industrial, transport and agricultural sectors. The zero-carbon hydrogen economy can thus be considered one of the key ambitions within the Dutch climate policies.

The focus on zero-carbon hydrogen and the processes by which this can be achieved, such as the use of renewable electricity, provides new opportunities for RES investors but also raises questions which Fleur Greetham and Thomas Weenink address:

  • How much electrolysis will be developed?
  • How should RES investors deal with the emergence of electrolysis?
  • What impact will electrolysers have on renewable revenues?
  • What are the other benefits to RES portfolios and what hurdles need to be overcome?
