AFRY's expertise in hydropower automation
- Construction
We carry out electrical and plant construction for power plants and transformer stations on behalf of the customer. This includes, among other things, cabinet construction, cable dimensioning, and production of IO lists.
- Testing and commissioning
Our staff has extensive experience with workshop tests and commissioning. We have our own test equipment to perform secondary tests of relay protection e.g.
- Calculations and simulations
We perform calculations for selective plans and other types of dimensioning on behalf of the customer. We also perform network simulations to validate controller parameters and study various failure cases.
- PLC programming
We have experience in PLC programming in Siemens systems (S7-300, S7-1500) and ABB systems (AC110, AC500, AC800).
- Troubleshooting and condition checking
We perform troubleshooting and condition checks of magnetization systems of all types and makes. We can help with obtaining spare parts and replacing obsolete components and regulators.
- Calculations and simulations
We perform calculations for selective plans and other types of dimensioning on behalf of the customer. We also perform network simulations to validate controller parameters and study various failure cases.

We offer excitation systems and AVRs for generators and motors of all types and sizes.
Our automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is fully equipped with control and limiter functions. The excitation system can be fitted to meet more complex requirements; redundant rectifiers and AVRs, electrical braking, PSS, etc.
The AVR is PLC-based and can be delivered with Siemens (S7-1500, S7-300) and ABB (AC800, AC500).
We have a self-developed electronic turbine controller for hydropower turbines of the Kaplan and Francis types.
The turbine controller can be delivered as an independent system or as an integrated part of unit automation.
All control power functions (FCR-N/D etc.) are included and the regulator can be easily integrated with the battery regulator to form a hybrid energy system.
We supply automation systems for stations and aggregate control to hydropower plants. The system is based on Siemens S7-1500 and WinCC Professional.
We deliver relay protection for generators, motors, transformers, and lines.
We have experience with relay protection from Siemens, ABB, Micom, GE, Schneider, Vamp, and Arcteq.
Our battery controller for controlling battery energy storage has features to support slow hydro turbines with fast power addition enabling compliance with control power requirements.
