Environmental consultancy for Turku Region Wastewater Plant
TBM tunneling method used for Kakolanmäki wastewater treatment plant reduced 55% of the greenhouse emissions in construction
Turku Region Wastewater Plant Ltd. is a wastewater treatment service provider owned by 14 municipalities in Southwest Finland. The company is responsible for the operation of Kakolanmäki wastewater treatment plant in the city of Turku and processing municipal wastewater of approximately 300,000 inhabitants. AFRY has acted as the designer in the new discharge pipe project and the new underground UV-facility as an extension of the current wastewater facility.
The new wastewater discharge pipe to Turku Harbour basin is under construction and it will be ready for operation by 2023. A significant part of the project was finished during summer 2020 while 800 metres of the discharge pipe was constructed in the busiest area of the city of Turku and harbour area by micro tunnelling. AFRYs environmental consultants reviewed the alternative construction methods and calculated carbon footprint for the construction by an open pit excavation. Results showed that by choosing the TBM (tunnel boring machine) construction method Turku Region Wastewater Treatment Plant Ltd. managed to avoid approximately 55 % of the greenhouse gas emissions in construction. By micro tunnelling also disturbance to the traffic, retouring and increase in traffic related GHG emissions were avoided.
